Provenance

  • 1906: sold at auction, Christie's, London, 9 July 1906 (lot 39) as 'A Study of a draped female figure, from the artist's model "Jo" [sic]', and bought by Colnaghi, London dealers.
  • 1914: 'Study of his Model "Joe" draped & nude' bought from V. G. Fischer, New York, by Knoedler, New York dealers, 13 March;
  • 1916: sold by Knoedler's to Hunt Henderson (1869-1939) , New Orleans, in November (#13442);
  • 1939: bequeathed to Tulane University, New Orleans;
  • 1941: bought with twenty other works by Grenville Lindell Winthrop (1864-1943) ;
  • 1943: bequeathed to the Fogg Art Museum.

Exhibitions

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
