Provenance

• 1870s: acquired, probably from the artist, by William Cleverly Alexander (1840-1916) ;
• 1916: passed by family descent to relatives of W. C. Alexander;
• 2016: accepted by H. M. Government in Lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
