  • Date unknown: in the collection of Walter Lippmann (1899-1974).
  • 1972: sold by Messrs Agnew, London art dealers, to a private collector;
  • 1972: with an art dealer in Washington, DC.
  • By 1988: with a private collector;
  • 1988: on deposit with Galerie Lareuse, Washington, DC, but returned to the owner.

The early history is unknown and the later provenance is not clear, and the present whereabouts are uncertain.

Exhibitions

  • 1903: possibly Watercolours, Pastels, Drawings in Black and White, Sculptures and Bronzes By British and Foreign Artists Including A Selection of Works by H. B. Brabazon, and A Group of Works by the late James McNeill Whistler, W. Marchant & Co., Goupil Gallery, London, 1903 (cat. no. 188) as 'Study of a Head.'

It is possible that the drawing was for sale by William Stephen Marchant (1868-1925) in 1903.
