Provenance

  • 1870s: possibly given by Whistler to his neighbour Emilie Venturi (1821–1893) ;
  • 1893-1969: passed by family descent to her great-nephew, Wyon James Stansfield (1908-1988);
  • 1969: sold at auction, Sotheby's, London, 23 April 1969 (lot 3) as 'Winter Landscape', bought by Williams & Son, London art dealers, for Ira Spanierman (n/a) , New York dealer;
  • 1974: at auction, Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, 23 May 1974 (lot 41B, repr) bought in;
  • 1974: bought by a private collector in Sarasota, Florida;
  • 1984: sold on 5 May through Hope Davis, New York dealer, to a private collector.

Exhibitions

  • 1874: possibly Mr Whistler's Exhibition, Flemish Gallery, 48 Pall Mall, London, 1874 (cat. no. 24) as 'Snow Piece' (but see A Snowy landscape [M.0573]).
