Nude reclining

Provenance

  • 1927: probably consigned by Mrs John C. Denton Carlisle née Elsie Hope Smiley (m. 1922), of 3 Curzon Street, London, W., for auction, Christie's, London, 17 June 1927 (lot 47) as 'A Lady Reclining' and bought by Colnaghi, London art dealers, for £99.15.0.;
  • 1927: sold by Colnaghi's on 24 June to Leonard Gow (1859-1936) (#A4982);
  • 1937: probably sold with the Gow collection, at auction, Christie's, London, 28 May 1937 (lot 29) as 'A Nude Female Model Reclining' and bought again by Colnaghi's;
  • 1940: in May, Knoedler and Carstairs, New York dealers, took shares;
  • 1941: sold on 1 April 1 (#A1873), with Tillie: Study in Pink and Mauve [M.0370], probably to Grenville Lindell Winthrop (1864-1943) ;
  • 1943: Winthrop bequeathed both drawings to the Fogg Art Museum.

The early provenance is unknown.

Exhibitions

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
