Boats at Venice

Provenance

  • 1902: possibly acquired from Whistler in exchange for a medal by Jeffrey Whitehead (b. ca 1831) of Newstead, Wimbledon, a partner in the firm of Whitehead & Coles, stockbrokers of 39 Throgmorton Street, London, E. C.
  • 1906: sold at auction, Christie's, London, 2 April 1906 (lot 123) as 'Boats at Venice', bought by 'Horne' for £2.10.0.

It is not certain that these two references apply to the same drawing.

In 1902 Ernest George Brown (1851-1915) acted as intermediary, writing to Whitehead on Whistler's behalf on 12 December. However, although Whitehead agreed to return the medal, there is no confirmation of him actually receiving a drawing. 1
