Miss Cumberlege

Provenance

  • 1882: given by Whistler to Miss Gertrude Frances Balmain Cumberlege (1866-1945).
  • 1928: sold at auction, Christie's, London, 16 July 1926 (lot 52a) as 'Miss Cumberlege' and bought by Knoedler's, New York dealers;
  • 1928: sold to Charles Sessler (1854-1935), dealer, Philadelphia, and immediately sold by him to Lessing Julius Rosenwald (1891-1971) , December 1928;
  • 1943: given to the National Gallery of Art;
  • 1980: moved from Alverthorpe to the National Gallery of Art.

It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
