Provenance

  • 1899: possibly consigned by Boussod, Valadon & Cie., Paris and London dealers, for sale at auction, Christie's, London, 2 December 1899 (lot 61) as 'A Street Scene', bought by Obach, London dealers;
  • 1901: possibly the 'Street Scene, Paris' bought from Obach's by Agnew's, London dealers (label; #3772 or 3773).
  • 1903: 'Rue Lafitte' was with William Stephen Marchant (1868-1925), London art dealer;
  • 1904: possibly bought by Wallis & Sons, London dealers.
  • 1906: bought as 'Rouen' on 24 December from W. Scott, Montreal art dealers, by Margaret Selkirk Watson Parker (1867-1936) ;
  • 1936: bequeathed to the University of Michigan Museum of Art, with a life interest to her husband, Dr Walter R. Parker (1866-1955) .

Exhibitions

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
