  • ca 1890: possibly owned by Charles James Whistler Hanson (1870-1935) .
  • ca 1955: bought by Alister Mathews (1907-1985), art dealer, Bournemouth;
  • In or after 1955: sold to Stewart Huston (d. 1971), Coatesville and Charlestown, NC.
  • 1988: sold at auction, Christie's, New York, 30 September 1988 (lot 131) as 'Portrait of a Lady', and bought by a private collector.

If this was owned by Whistler's son, which is possible, then it could have been inherited by his wife Sarah Ann Hanson (b. 1874), née Murray, who died in 1944, and their son Adrian Charles Whistler Hanson (1902-1967).
