• 1867: John Birnie Philip (1824-1875) ;
• 1875: passed by family descent to his daughter, Beatrice Philip (Mrs E. W. Godwin, Mrs J. McN. Whistler) (1857-1896) ;
• 1896: passed either to J. McN. Whistler or to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
• 1955: given by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.

The book belonged to the sculptor J. B. Philip, best known for his work on the Albert Memorial. Beatrice Philip probably worked in his studio before studying with, and later marrying, Edward William Godwin (1833-1886), and, on his death, Whistler.
