Provenance

• 1889: sold by the Trustees of the estate of the bankrupted Alphonse Wyatt Thibaudeau (1840-1892) , Sotheby's, London, 9-13 December 1889 (lot 1138) as 'Female Figure reclining on a couch' and bought by Dowdeswell, London dealers.

Whistler was in contact with Thibaudeau, an art dealer, from the late 1870s on, and was particularly close to him in the mid 1880s.
