Reading from upper left to lower right, these butterflies were used as signatures, as follows: (a) p. 217, 'A Retrospect', a letter to the Pall Mall Gazette, replying to an article of 6 July 1888 concerning the RBA's declining income; (b) p. 276, 'Whistler's Grievance', letter to New York Herald, 6 0ctober 1889, regarding an exhibition; (c) p. 210, 'An Interview with an ex-President', Pall Mall Gazette, 11 June 1888; (d) not used.
