Provenance

  • 1896: possibly given by Whistler to Thomas Robert Way (1861-1913) or his father Thomas Way (1837-1915) ;
  • 1919: possibly sold at auction, Sotheby's, London, 27 May 1919 (lot 169) as 'Portrait of T. Way', bought by Colnaghi's, London art dealers;
  • 1921: sold to Scott and Fowles, New York dealers, 20 June 1921.
  • 1921/1930s: at some time with Charles Sessler (1854-1935) , Philadelphia dealer.
  • ca 1965: bought by a prvate collector, Baltimore, MD;
  • 1990: bought by the Mansfield-Whittemore-Crown collection, and on loan to the Art Institute of Chicago;
  • 2004: gift of the Crown Family to the Art Institute of Chicago, in honour of James N. Wood.

Exhibitions

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
