Nude women

Nude women dates from 1896 or earlier. On 18 July 1896 Max Beerbohm (1872-1956) wrote to William Rothenstein (1872-1945):

'I was taken to see a man - a nouveau riche named Crofter - the other day: he showed me some chalk sketches by Whistler - nude women drawn in rough & short strokes - which I really found rather charming - I began to think that you were right in your idolatry & that the man really does possess a touch of genius.' 1

Catalogued in MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 1470).
