Provenance

  • 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and given by his sister-in-law and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) and sister-in-law Ethel Whibley (1861-1920) on 11 August 1903 to Arthur Haythorne Studd (1863-1919) ;
  • 1919: bequeathed by Arthur H. Studd to Ethel Whibley (1861-1920) and Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
  • 1920: after the death of Ethel Whibley, owned solely by her sister Miss Rosalind Birnie Philip;
  • 1958: bequeathed by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.

The inscription indicates that this drawing was a gift from the Birnie Philip 'ladies' to the sitter, Arthur Haythorne Studd. His will specified that it should be returned to Ethel Whibley and Rosalind Birnie Philip. 1

Exhibitions

It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
