Provenance

• 1897: bought from Whistler by Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932) .
• By 1902: Emily Tuckerman (1853-1924) , Washington, DC;
• 1924: possibly passed to Miss Tuckerman's estate.

Miss Tuckerman died in New York, and was survived by her brothers, Alfred Tuckerman (1848-1925) of Newport, and Paul Tuckerman (1856-1940) of Tuxedo Park, N.Y., and several nephews and nieces. Paul's daughter Dorothy, Mrs George Draper (1889-1969) gave one work, Portrait of Miss Emily Tuckerman [M.1546a], to the Freer Gallery of Art.
