  • 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
  • 1958: bequeathed by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.
  • 1968: deaccessioned, in a part exchange (for Copy after Ingres's 'Roger délivrant Angélique' [YMSM 011]) with Ira Spanierman (n/a) , art dealer, New York;
  • By 1986: bought by Davis and Long, New York dealers, and sold to Paul Mellon (1907-1999) ;
  • 1993: given to the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, CT.
