• 1903: in Whistler's studio in 1903 and bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
• 1943: bought by Colnaghi's, London art dealers, 2 February, and sold to E. J. Spielman, 8 May;
• 1954: bought by Knoedler's, New York dealers;
• 1954: sold to Emily Crane Chadbourne (1871-1964) , Stone Ridge, NY, and Chicago, 25 May 1954.
• 1969: sold at auction, Christie's, London, 21 November 1969 (lot 199, repr.) as 'Boats in an Estuary'.
