Provenance

  • 1903: bought on 8 May from Whistler by Richard Albert Canfield (1855-1914) , Providence, RI;
  • 1914; bought on 12 March by Knoedler's, New York dealers;
  • 1919: sold on 30 June to Herbert Farrington Perkins (1864-1936), Chicago.

The last known owner was the print collector Herbert F. Perkins, Chicago. He and his wife Margaret Dana Head Perkins (1870-1958) had several children: Franklin Head Perkins (1894-1929), Margaret (b. 1896) and her twin Helen (Mrs F. M. Knight, 1896-1977), and Elizabeth (Mrs M. E. Borish, 1909-1997). Franklin married Margaret Shortall Perkins Baker (1896-1990) and had one son, John Shortall Perkins (1926-2006).
