Painted on a panel primed with pale grey paint. It is painted very carefully, in considerable detail, with soft, delicate brushstrokes, in thin paint.
According to Freer Gallery conservation files, the varnish was removed in 1921, it was cleaned and varnished in 1937 and resurfaced in 1938 and 1952-53. There is a lot of fine craquelure, which is particularly noticeable on the dark areas.
