Alice Butt (1)

Titles

Two different titles are known:

  • 'Alice Butt - No. 2.' (1900, Whistler). 1
  • 'Alice Butt' (1901, Whistler). 2
  • 'Une Jeune Fille des Rues' (1904, T. Duret). 3
  • 'Une Jeune Fille des Rues, 1878-1887' (1904, Copley Society, Boston). 4
  • 'Alice Butt (1)' (1980, YMSM). 5

The same model appears in Alice Butt (2) [YMSM 438]. McLaren Young suggested that Alice Butt (1) [YMSM 437] was painted in Chelsea in the early 1880s, and that the French title 'Une Jeune Fille des Rues', used at the time of the Boston exhibitions in 1904 and 1934, was Duret's rather than Whistler's. 6
