A draped model reclining with a fan

A draped model reclining with a fan probably dates from about 1900, and was written on the reverse of a fragment of an unrelated letter from Whistler to an unknown recipient. 1 Yhe sofa is seen in drawings from those dates, and particularly around 1900 (see, for instance, Ethel Warwick asleep on a sofa [M.1604]).

It is catalogued in MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 1609).

Notes:

1: Fragment, [June 1896/1897], GUW #09586. The final version of the letter bears a deep mourning border, indicating a date after Whistler's wife died in 1896, and gives the address of 8 Fitzroy Street, Whistler's studio from that date until his death (GUW #09619).
