This is an exciting moment, as, despite problems caused by a difficult eight months, the completed digital publication, The Paintings of James McNeill Whistler: A Catalogue Raisonné, prepares for the imminent publication of the completed catalogue, available online and completely free to all. Also newly available is a fascinating book: The Woman in White: Joanna Hiffernan and James McNeill Whistler, by Margaret F. MacDonald, with contributions by Patricia de Montfort, Joanna Dunn and Joyce H. Townsend, Aileen Ribeiro, Grischka Petri, and Charles Brock, and published by Yale University Press in association with the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. This book explores the partnership of artist and model in the creation of a series of beautiful prints and paintings, including three of the most influential paintings of the 19th century, the Symphonies in White. And also newly online is a gorgeous publication by the Art Institute of Chicago. Their new digital publication, Whistler Paintings and Drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago, went live on 16 November. You can see it on the AIC website. It reveals fascinating research on their great collection, presented in an accessible way, interesting and simply stunning.
