Provenance

  • 1903: in the artist's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
  • 1956: sold on 11 May by Miss Birnie Philip to P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., Ltd, London art dealers;
  • 1957: bought on 5 November by Alister Mathews (1907-1985), art dealer, Bournemouth, who sold it to an American collector.
  • Date unknown: bought by Robert Owen Lehman (1891-1969);
  • 1969: bequeathed to the Robert Lehman Foundation Inc.;
  • 1970: the Lehman Collection was transferred to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
