Lillie

Titles

Descriptive titles were suggested:

  • 'Lillie seated ... Lillie seated on sofa' (1901, R. B. Philip). 1
  • 'Lillie' (1980, YMSM). 2

Description

According to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) the panels were as follows: 'Full length in red frock standing by chair', 'Lillie seated. (red frock)' and 'Full length. Lillie seated on sofa. (White Pinafore. Red cap).' 3

No such small oil panels of Lillie have survived although there are pastels (on brown paper laid down on heavy cardboard) that came with Whistler's estate to the University of Glasgow, and it is possible that Miss Birnie Philip listed the portraits incorrectly.

One such drawing shows Lillie seated, wearing a pinafore and cap. Although barely touched with colour, it could be the third 'panel' listed by Miss Birnie Philip.

Sitter

Lilian ('Lily') Pamington (b. 1887/1888). For other portraits of Lillie Pamington, see Brown and Gold: Lillie 'In our Alley!' [YMSM 464].
